More states are coming soon. Every U.S. nonprofit hospital must offer financial assistance, so if your state isn't listed yet you can still get general guidance.
In Minnesota, if you are uninsured a hospital must screen you for free or discounted charity care and give you a real chance to apply — and offer a reasonable payment plan — before sending you to collections. Hospitals also cannot charge an uninsured patient with household income under $125,000 more than the lowest price they accept from an insurer (Minn. Stat. §§ 144.587–144.589).
