In New Mexico, if your household income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, hospitals and debt collectors cannot sue you, garnish your wages, or pursue collection actions for medical bills — and any collection already started must stop once you are found to qualify (Patients' Debt Collection Protection Act, NMSA 1978 §§ 57-32-1 to -10).
